Pongal

The IGSA is proud to celebrate the beautiful festival of Thai Pongal/ Makar Sankranti for the very first time this year!

Thai Pongal/ Makar Sankranti is a festival day in the Hindu calendar, in reference to the deity Surya in the month of January each year. It is also one of the biggest festivals celebrated by Tamil community. Known as Makar Sankranti in other states in India, this festival is celebrated to convey appreciation to the Sun God for a successful harvest. Part of the celebration of Thai Pongal is the boiling of the first rice of the season consecrated to the Sun - Lord Surya. Other parts of the country celebrate Sankranti by flying kites.

Look out for more information in December!
